From Clean to Race-Ready: How I Oil My Filters with Motul A3
david goosenShare
If you caught my previous post on why I swear by Motul A1 Air Filter Cleaner, you’ll know I take my air filter maintenance seriously. Today, I’m following up with the next crucial step, oiling your filters the right way using Motul A3 Air Filter Oil.
After a good clean (and a solid shake-out to get rid of any leftover sand), I prep my filters for oiling. Here’s how I do it — and why.
My Pro Trick to Avoid Over-Oiling
The Motul A3 oil comes with a wide-mouth lid, which can lead to way too much product flooding out. To stay in control, I drill two holes in the top of the bottle — one as a breather and the other to control the pour. This lets me string the oil on evenly without drowning the filter.
Over-oiling might seem safer, but it actually chokes your bike’s airflow. If you’re a weekend warrior going long distance, you’ll want a well-oiled filter, but if you’re a 20-minute moto guy like me, less is more. Too much oil means less power and harder starts.
Why I like Motul A3

This oil is thick, sticky, and dark blue, so you can clearly see where you’ve applied it. After an even coating, I massage it in gently with a bit of twisting and wringing. Firm, consistent pressure to work it through the sponge. A good visual check shows you where it needs a touch more, and you’re done. No mess. No waste. No fuss.

If the filter is too oily, you’ll know fast, your bike won’t want to start. That means you’ve restricted the airflow, and the engine’s gasping for air.
A Final Tip: Use the Sun
Got a warm day? Let the oil sit in the sun a bit. It’ll thin out slightly, making it easier to apply and spread. That’s another little hack that saves time and gives great results
Whether you’re new to filter maintenance or just want a cleaner, quicker, and smarter way to do it, Motul A3 Air Filter Oil has got your back. And hey, it might be sticky, but that’s exactly why it works.
